Breast Cancer care
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and the most frequent cancer diagnosed and treated at Main Line Health. Fortunately, advances in prevention, early detection and treatment mean more women diagnosed with breast cancer are living longer and with better quality of life than ever before. While there are many types of breast cancer, there is only one you, and our program is here to help you through every stage, from diagnosis through survivorship — mind, body and spirit.
Expert team and collaboration
At Main Line Health, no one faces breast cancer alone. At each of our four accredited breast centers, you have the focused attention of an experienced breast care team that includes fellowship-trained breast surgeons, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, genetic counselors, oncology certified nurses, oncology social workers, oncology nutritionists and oncology nurse navigators.
Regular breast tumor conferences allow the team to review each newly diagnosed case from every angle to optimize your initial treatment, and then to reassess at each step in your care. This ensures that you benefit from all services appropriate for you, such as genetic counseling, fertility management, treatment with new medications or immunotherapies, clinical trials and management of any complications affecting cancer treatment or your quality of life.
Nurse navigator support
We understand the anxiety surrounding a cancer diagnosis. Wherever you are in your breast cancer journey, specialized oncology nurse navigators will guide and support you through every aspect of your care. They will help you understand your options and facilitate appointments, advocate for your best interests and help you stay organized so you can focus on healing.
We will also help you and your loved ones find your way through the complexities of breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and access all services available at Main Line Health including our financial advisors, social workers and support groups.
Personalized treatment
There are many different types of breast cancer, and many ways to treat it. Your treatment plan will be tailored to your type of cancer, whether it has spread, specific characteristics of your tumor and your personal needs and preferences.
In many cases, studying a cancer cell’s DNA can help determine the kinds of treatments likely to be most effective as well as those with the fewest side effects. Not all cancers – even the same type of cancer – share the same genetic mutations, and this discovery opens the door to precision cancer medicine.
Your cancer treatment plan may include a combination of targeted therapies based on your tumor’s genetic makeup, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy.
Genetic testing
Main Line Health's Genetics and Risk Assessment Program can help you and your family make sense of your genetic history. This can help guide your treatment and offer additional options for risk reduction for yourself as well as your family members.
Clinical trials
Through the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research (LIMR), Main Line Health patients have access to innovative clinical trials, including promising therapies that are not yet widely available.
